2024 US OPEN RUNNER-UP JESS PEGULA REACTS
The American No.6 seed says it’s been an incredible month after a rough start to the season.
She’s grateful she turned it around and had a hot summer (of form).
She jokes that she wishes Aryna would have at least let her win one set!
She goes on to describe Aryna as the best hard court player in the world and was proud that she fought back a bit to give herself opportunities.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - SABALENKA 7-5 7-5 PEGULA
Aryna Sabalenka is a Grand Slam champion for a third time!
The Belarusian adds a maiden US Open crown to her two Australian Open titles as she downs the USA’s Jessica Pegula in two keenly-contested sets.
The World No.2 broke again on her second match point to prevail in one hour and 53 minutes.
The victory sees Sabalenka extend her winning streak to 13 matches and become the fourth player in the last decade to win multiple majors in a season, following in the footsteps of Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber and Iga Swiatek.
Pegula gave it everything but couldn’t quite pull off the shock. The 30-year-old finally got over her Grand Slam quarter-final hump but came up short in her maiden major final.
She will rise back to No.3 in the world as a result of her efforts.

BREAK! – SABALENKA 7-5 5-5 PEGULA
A pulsating rally kicks off the game with more fabulous scrambling threatening to see Jess pull off a steal once more.
Aryna has other ideas as she turns away from the net and leaps into the air, flicking back a no-look backhand smash crosscourt to improvise her way to the point.
It rattles Pegula who goes on to offer up triple break point with a backhand long.
The American staves off two but can do little about the third as Sabalenka re-directs a scintillating forehand winner down the line to level the set.

SABALENKA 7-5 4-5 PEGULA
Aryna stops the rot with a hold to 30 as Pegula drifts a poor second serve return long.
Jess will now serve to try and take us into a decider.

SABALENKA 7-5 3-5 PEGULA
Make that five games on the spin!
Pegula continues to defend magnificently and counter punch when she can.
Sabalenka is getting a bit ragged and the unforced errors from the Belarusian make it a topsy-turvy game as 30-0 turns to 30-30 and 40-30 before the American double faults to take us to deuce.
Again, it’s Pegula who is the more solid player and Sabalenka is left fuming as the No.6 seed grits it out to consolidate.

BREAK! – SABALENKA 7-5 3-4 PEGULA
It’s four games in a row!
Pegula looked down and out with a face like thunder at 3-0 and 30-40, but she’s battled her way back into contention and at 30-30 unloads a thunderous forehand down the line to tee up another break point.
A short crosscourt slice then flummoxes a forehand error into the net from a bewildered Saba, who needs to re-focus quickly here.

SABALENKA 7-5 3-3 PEGULA
Pegula’s confidence is up and she nails winners off both flanks, getting down low to execute a sublime crosscourt forehand.
She goes big on a second serve at 40-0 but double faults and allows Aryna a nibble that turns into an almighty bite.
The Belarusian turns an intense rally her way to force an error into the net and make deuce, but then drills a backhand pass into the tramlines before another miss off that wing allows Jess to belatedly achieve parity on the board.

BREAK! – SABALENKA 7-5 3-2 PEGULA
Well, well, well!
Just when you thought it would be a procession to the finish line, Sabalenka dips into a lull and Pegula takes advantage!
The American is firmly switched on as she attacks a big second serve and tempts Aryna into going too big on a forehand.
It offers up two break points and Jessica makes it count on the second when deep counter punching forces an awkward forehand long from the World No.2.
22:34
SABALENKA 7-5 3-1 PEGULA
Aryna keeps crushing the ball on return, relentlessly hitting lines.
Another forehand winner – her 32nd of the final – tees up another BP but Jess fends it off with an excellent counter punch of her own off the same flank.
The American seems to ignite some belief from deuce and the serve helps her to wriggle out of dodge and get on the board.

SABALENKA 7-5 3-0 PEGULA
Aryna is on the charge!
The two-time major winner hammers down ace No.5 to finish as she consolidates to love to leave Jess with a mountain to climb.

BREAK! – SABALENKA 7-5 2-0 PEGULA
Is that curtains for Pegula?
The American can’t find the first serve and ends up being outgunned with Sabalenka sizzling a delicious backhand pass down the line on her way to two more break points.
Sabalenka can’t convert the first but doesn’t have to do anything on the second as Jess double faults at the worst possible time.
The No.6 seed reacts by hurling her racquet to the floor. It's not often you see her act in such a way, but she knows how significant that may be.
22:23
SABALENKA 7-5 1-0 PEGULA
And breathe…
There’s no doubt Sabalenka was feeling stressed trying to break through Pegula’s stubborn resistance in that first set.
There’s much more calm about her with that opener under her belt and she powers down a clutch serve to clinch a game to 30 after Pegula had threatened a revival from 40-0 down.

SET! - SABALENKA 7-5 PEGULA
The opening set finally goes the way of Aryna Sabalenka.
It was an enthralling, rollercoaster finale with Pegula threatening the comeback, but in the end the World No.2 comes up trumps as she eventually breaches the American’s outstanding defence to take a one-hour opener from deuce on a FIFTH opportunity.

SABALENKA 6-5 PEGULA
Pegula is feeling it right now and a supreme forehand return winner down the line has Sabalenka over-thinking at 30-30.
The No.2 seed double faults to offer up another break point and repeatedly batters her racquet on the floor.
Internally, she calms herself into letting her tennis do the talking and a beauty of a backhand down the line licks the back of the baseline and staves it off.
There’s a tense face-off around deuce where the Belarusian struggles to convert game points, chucking in another double fault to betray her inner turmoil.
It takes some doing but the World No.2 finally drags herself over the line when Pegula lobs long.
