A number of riders fell to the floor during a crash towards the end of Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes. Among them was race leader Demi Vollering and Great Britain's Pfeiffer Georgi. While Vollering finished the stage, Georgi has had to abandon the race. Both of their teams have given updates on their injuries, with Vollering looking set to continue on Friday.
Pfeiffer Georgi sustained “multiple injuries” during a crash on Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes that has ruled her out of the race, while Demi Vollering's team have given a "positive" update on her health.
Great Britain’s Georgi and yellow jersey Vollering were among a number of riders who were involved in a pile-up with around 6km of the stage remaining.
While yellow jersey Vollering was able to get back on her bike and finish the stage - albeit no longer with the race lead - Georgi had to abandon the race.
An update later in the evening from her team DSM-Firmenich PostNL said: “After her crash today at Tour de France Femmes, Pfeiffer Georgi is doing well given the gravity of her fall.
“She has sustained multiple injuries but at this stage they don’t look too serious, however she is still undergoing further checks in hospital so we will provide a further and full update after they are concluded tomorrow.
“Thinking of you Pfeiffer and sending you healing power.”
The 23-year-old, who came fifth in the road race at the Paris Olympics, was 45th in the general classification ahead of Stage 5.
Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime) won Thursday's stage in a sprint finish while Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon–SRAM) now leads the overall standings.
Vollering finished one minute and 47 seconds behind Vas and has slipped down to ninth in the GC standings, one minute and 19 seconds behind new yellow jersey Niewiadoma.
A statement from SD Worx-Protime said: "Demi Vollering was examined at the hotel by the Team SD Worx-Protime team doctor after her fall in the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes.
"She suffered minor bruising and superficial abrasions to her lower back and buttock. The focus of treatment is to recover. It looks positive that Vollering will be able to continue the Tour on Friday."
Vollering added: “Considering how fast I fell, I’m glad I didn’t suffer any broken bones. After the fall I had to recover and check everything. Then I was able to get back on my bike and continue the race.
"Now we have to wait and see how it feels tomorrow morning, but I assume I will be able to continue the Tour tomorrow.
"I am happy that Blanka Vas still managed to win the stage. After her disappointment of just missing out on a medal at the Olympics, she picks up a beautiful victory here.”
