Primoz Roglic has revealed he suffered a fracture to his lower back during a crash in the 2024 Tour de France.
The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider withdrew from the French Grand Tour after crashing on Stage 12.
He was brought down 12km from the finish line after Alexey Lutsenko hit some road furniture and fell over, and despite finishing the stage, was then ruled out of competing further.
Roglic has now shared the extent of his injury, writing on Instagram: "Life is not the easiest sometimes, huh?
"Further examinations after the [Tour de France] crash showed a nondisplaced lwk3 fracture of processus transversus in the lower back so last week I was recovering at Red Bull Athlete Performance Center, where they were taking the best care of me.
"I’m slowly getting back on the bike and taking my time to recover and will see where this takes us… In this time I realised, once again, that I have the best fans In the world. Thank you."
The 34-year-old’s injury puts his participation at the Vuelta a Espana into doubt, with the race getting underway on August 17.
Roglic is a three-time Vuelta champion and would equal Roberto Heras for the most wins at the Spanish Grand Tour with a fourth title.
Team boss Ralph Denk has also cast doubt on Roglic’s participation, telling the Inside Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe podcast: “Primož is currently only training a bit on the indoor trainer, I don't think it's clear yet whether he will participate in the Vuelta.
"I'm sure the director would like to have him at the start, but I can't confirm that yet."
