Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe will be sidelined after suffering a “biceps femoris” injury to his left leg in the club's 3-2 win over Alaves on Tuesday. Mbappe will reportedly be unavailable for selection for around three weeks and is set to miss the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid on Sunday. In a statement, the club revealed that the forward's "progress will be monitored".
Kylian Mbappe will miss the derby with Atletico Madrid after Real Madrid confirmed the French forward had suffered a leg injury.
The superstar was replaced in the 80th minute of Madrid’s 3-2 win over Alaves on Tuesday, where he scored in the first half to put the hosts 2-0 ahead at the Bernabeu.
He is expected to miss around three weeks, according to various reports.
Mbappe, 25, has scored in his last five games in all competitions - netting six goals in the process - but is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a “biceps femoris” injury.
A Madrid statement read: “Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid's Medical Services on our player Kylian Mbappe, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the biceps femoris in his left leg.
“His progress will be monitored.”
The Frenchman will miss the trip to neighbours Atletico on Sunday, while he is also set to sit out the home match against Villarreal the following week.
Wedged between the two Liga fixtures is a trip to Lille in the UEFA Champions League - live on TNT Sports and discovery+ - as defending champions Real look to follow up their opening European victory against VfB Stuttgart.
Following the league match against Villarreal, there will be a break in club football for the second international break of the season.
Madrid will return to action against Celta Viga on October 19, where Mbappe could make his return to action.
The Spanish champions are currently second in the league table, one point behind their in-form rivals Barcelona, who have a game in hand.
Madrid could drop to third should Atletico beat Celta Vigo on Thursday and then Ancelotti’s side fall to defeat in the derby.
Both Ancelotti and Madrid will hope to have Mbappe back fit and firing when they face Barca at the end of October, which would be the France captain’s first taste of El Clasico.
TNT Sports will show over 500 matches from the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League across the 2024/25 season. The streaming home for TNT Sports in the UK is discovery+, where fans can enjoy a subscription that includes TNT Sports, Eurosport and entertainment in one destination.
