British Open snooker: Neil Robertson suffers shock exit as Rory Thor continues giant-killing run

World No. 81 Rory Thor won the final three frames from 3-1 down to oust new English Open champion Neil Robertson 4-3 in the British Open last 32. After stunning Mark Williams 4-1 in the first round, the Malaysian player was a deserving winner against Robertson, who pinched two of the first four frames on the black. Thor next faces John Higgins or Graeme Dott in the last 16 on Thursday night.
Rory Thor continued to bring the hammer down on former world champions at the British Open in Cheltenham as he hit back from 3-1 behind to sink Neil Robertson 4-3 in a last-32 match that finished after 1am on Thursday morning.
Despite producing breaks of 55, 55 and 58 in the opening four frames, the world No. 81 from Malaysia trailed 3-1 after new English Open champion Robertson, who opened with a 78, pinched two frames on the final black.
But Thor refused to buckle as he dominated the final three frames at the Centaur, including enjoying a run of 90 in the sixth frame, for the concession of only 16 points to secure a last-16 meeting with John Higgins or Graeme Dott on Thursday night.
After easing past three-time Crucible winner Mark Williams 4-1 in the first round, Thor has the chance to account for a third world champion in Higgins or Dott as he chases a spot in the quarter-finals on Friday.
That would be the best run of his career as he bids to retain his tour card by finishing inside the top 64 at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Scottish rivals Higgins and Dott meet at 1pm on Thursday in a repeat of the 2001 British Open final which Higgins won 9-6 in Newcastle.
